Geography and Borders

Sokoto is located in the extreme northwest. It shares international borders with the Republic of Niger to the north. Domestically, it is bordered by Kebbi State to the west and south, and Zamfara State to the east.

Governance: From 1976 to Date

As the center of the historic Sokoto Caliphate, the state’s governance is closely tied to its heritage:

• Umaru Mohammed (1976–1978): The first Military Governor.
• Shehu Kangiwa (1979–1981): The first Executive Governor.
• Attahiru Bafarawa (1999–2007): Focused on rural road networks and education.
• Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko (2007–2015): Known for populist projects and urban expansion.
• Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (2015–2023): Former Speaker of the House of Reps who focused on civil service and education reforms.

Education and Landmarks
