‘Stop The Drama’ – Peter Obi Attacked Over Wife’s Luxury Handbag Worth Over ₦200 Million

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has been criticised over his wife’s handbag reportedly worth over ₦200 million.

Naija News reports that in a viral video online, Margaret Obi was seen carrying a handbag that many social media users identified as a Hermès Kelly 35 in Malachite.

According to some netizens, the handbag is listed on the Hermès website for £131,938.81, which they estimated at about ₦237 million.

The reported price has triggered mixed reactions, with some Nigerians criticising Margaret for carrying such an expensive item, while others argue that she has the right to buy whatever she can afford.

Reacting to the debate online, the media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, Lere Olayinka, in a post via his 𝕏 handle, accused Peter Obi of presenting himself as prudent despite the reported luxury surrounding his family.

Olayinka challenged Nigerians to guess the cost of the bags Magret would purchase with public funds, if she could buy such a luxury bag as a private citizen.

He wrote, “The issue is, her husband should stop lying and presenting himself as a prudent person. You want the people to donate N1,000 to fund your campaign, but your wife is using one bag that will take the contribution of N1,000 by 250,000 Nigerians to buy? That’s a fraud.

“For those of you who will say, it is her money or her husband’s money. Yes, you are right. But if as a private citizen, the wife of a supposed prudent man can buy a single bag worth over N250m, you can do a guess as to the cost of bags she will buy with public funds.”

Also weighing in on the controversy, media personality, Daddy Freeze, said he had no problem with Margaret carrying a luxury handbag but questioned Peter Obi’s repeated claims of owning only one pair of shoes and one wristwatch, stressing that his lifestyle does not match the image of extreme modesty he projects.

He said,“I have no problem with Peter Obi’s wife carrying a luxury bag; her husband is a billionaire. He was rich before he came into government.

“The only problem I have with him is he says he only has one shoe and one watch, but when you put yourself in a certain light, and things around you don’t seem to add to that light, there is a problem.”

On his part, human rights, lawyer Deji Adeyanju, argued that the criticism is unnecessary, but the family had deceived the public about their lifestyle, adding that Peter Obi should stop the drama and acting

He said, “There’s really nothing wrong in the woman carrying this bag but they have deceived so many people about not giving shishi that many Nigerians are disgusted by their lifestyle.

“The husband usually flies a private jet and at other times, he will go to the end of Air peace economy class to act in the movie. Be yourself Mr. Obi and stop the drama and acting.”

  1. Abeg, let the woman breath…that’s your own estimate…you don’t know how much she bought it.it may even be fairly used and you want to slaughter her.pls I don’t mean any insult for saying fairly used becos we all use fairly used items which are cheaper than the tear rubber..that’s my tot though no harm 😉

Even if the bag cost over 300 million, she worth it bcos she not a house wife and she’s working. Had it been that her bag worth 50k, people will still talk and weigh/ scale the bag with their myopic and opaque mindset and mentality. If l may ask, if you’re a wife of a presidential candidate, will you carry a bag worth 20k?.
