Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has increased the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state from ₦10,000 to ₦20,000.
Aliyu also announced a one-off cash gift of ₦30,000 for each corps member currently undergoing orientation in the state.
The governor announced the incentives on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch C Stream II corps members at the NYSC Temporary Orientation Camp, College of Administration, Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Sokoto.
He said the increase reflected his administration’s commitment to improving corps members’ welfare and providing a conducive environment for their national service.
Aliyu also approved the donation of a Toyota Hilux vehicle to the NYSC to strengthen its monitoring and supervision activities, particularly in difficult terrains.
He further pledged to provide five cows daily to feed corps members throughout the orientation exercise.
The governor directed the management of the institution hosting the camp to urgently address electricity and water supply challenges.
“The role of corps members in promoting national integration and unity cannot be overemphasised,” he said.
Aliyu disclosed that his administration had committed more than ₦1 billion to renovating and upgrading the permanent NYSC orientation camp in Wamakko Local Government Area.
He said the project was about 90 per cent complete and assured corps members that their security and welfare would remain a priority.
The governor also urged ministries, government agencies and other employers not to reject corps members posted to their organisations.
He announced plans to establish a committee to ensure the effective implementation of the newly approved allowance.
Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Tyoyer Gabriel Ter, commended the governor for his consistent support for the scheme and the welfare of corps members.
Ter said Aliyu would soon receive recognition as the best NYSC-friendly governor in appreciation of his contributions to the scheme.
He also acknowledged the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, for supporting the scheme through the provision of bulls during orientation exercises and awards for the two best-performing corps members at each passing-out parade.
The coordinator appreciated the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Man O’ War and other paramilitary agencies, as well as philanthropists, for their contributions to the orientation exercise.
The Chief Judge of Sokoto State, Justice Muhammad Saidu Sifawa, represented by Justice Muhammad A. Sambo, administered the oath of allegiance to the newly deployed corps members.
