2026 World Cup: Thomas Tuchel Explains Shock England Omissions

Thomas Tuchel insists he has “no fear” over leaving out several high-profile stars from England’s World Cup squad after omitting the likes of Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold from his final 26-man team.

Naija News reports that the England manager unveiled his World squad earlier today, May 22, ahead of the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada, with several major absentees sparking immediate debate.

Harry Maguire was reportedly “shocked” and “gutted” after missing out, while Luke Shaw, Adam Wharton and Morgan Gibbs-White were also overlooked.

Tuchel said squad balance, rather than individual reputation, drove his decisions.

“From day one, we were very clear that we are trying to select and build the best possible team, which is not necessarily to select the best 26 most-talented players,” he said.

“Teams win championships, it’s as simple as that.”

Despite the omission of Foden and Palmer, Tuchel stressed neither player had done anything wrong.

“Very difficult decisions, painful conversations,” he said.

“What we’re trying to achieve as a team and we try to nominate a balanced squad. If everyone is selected, it was a given that from these 55 players, we have to leave some extraordinary talents, some extraordinary personalities at home.

“Did they do anything wrong? No. Could they be in camp? Yes. 100% sure. But for some of them, it is just the amount of players in a certain position.”

Tuchel added that Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers were preferred in attacking midfield roles, while specialist wingers offered greater balance out wide.

The biggest surprise in the squad was the inclusion of Ivan Toney, who plays for Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia.

Tuchel admitted the call-up “was a bit of a surprise to us” but backed the striker’s qualities.

“I think he has very special skills that could help us,” Tuchel said.

“He is a natural finisher, he can help us with set pieces, he is very strong in the air, very good at using his body.”

England begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia in Dallas on June 17 before facing Ghana and Panama in the group stage.
