Tuchel Axes Palmer, Foden, Arnold, Maguire From England’s World Cup Team [Full Squad]
England manager Thomas Tuchel has left out Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harry Maguire from his 26-man squad for this summer’s World Cup.
Naija News reports that the biggest shock came with the omission of Maguire, who admitted he was struggling to accept the decision after another strong season for Manchester United.
Maguire’s mother, Zoe, also criticised the call, saying on social media that she was “disgusted” by the decision.
Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw was also omitted despite being included in Tuchel’s provisional 55-man squad.
Instead, Tuchel handed places to Dan Burn and Nico O’Reilly, while Tottenham defender Djed Spence also made the final cut.
Spence recently suffered a broken jaw in Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat by Chelsea but is expected to wear a protective mask if he features against Everton on Sunday.
Chelsea defender Levi Colwill and AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori also missed out.
There was, however, a recall for Ivan Toney after a prolific season with Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, where he scored 32 goals in 32 matches.
Ollie Watkins was included after helping Aston Villa win the Europa League on Wednesday, while Arsenal winger Noni Madueke also secured a place.
Tuchel retained faith in John Stones despite the defender enduring an injury-hit campaign at Manchester City.
Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White was another notable absentee despite being one of the highest-scoring English players in the Premier League this season with 14 goals.
Adam Wharton also failed to make the squad, but Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo kept his place after returning for the recent friendlies.
Jordan Henderson, who has remained a trusted figure under Tuchel, was also selected.
Foden, who has 49 England caps, endured an inconsistent campaign for Manchester City, scoring seven league goals and producing five assists in 32 appearances.
Palmer also struggled for consistency during an injury-hit season at Chelsea, scoring nine goals in 25 Premier League matches.
England will warm up for the tournament with friendlies against New Zealand on June 6 and Costa Rica on June 10.
Tuchel’s side begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia on June 17 before further group matches against Ghana and Panama.
