Nollywood actor, Emeka Ike, has expressed disappointment at losing a ₦10 billion fundamental human rights suit against Senior Special Assistant to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, Lere Olayinka, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Naija News recalls that Emeka Ike dragged Wike’s aide and INEC before the court, demanding ₦10 billion in damages over the alleged publication of his personal data in INEC’s database.
In the suit, Emeka Ike claimed that Wike’s aide and INEC caused him untold hardship and damages, and therefore demanded ₦10 billion in compensation.
He also asked the court to declare the defendants’ actions illegal and unconstitutional.
Delivering judgment on Wednesday at the Federal High Court in Abuja, the presiding judge, Justice Salim Ibrahim, dismissed the suit for lacking merit and held that Emeka Ike failed to prove his case against Wike’s aide and INEC with credible evidence.
The judge therefore ruled in favour of Wike’s aide and INEC, stating that the plaintiff’s claims were unsubstantiated.
Speaking with journalists shortly after the judgment, Emeka Ike questioned what fundamental human rights meant, arguing that individuals could suffer rights violations and face online bullying and embarrassment without getting justice.
He said, “It’s even crazy that your right will be violated and the judge will tell you it’s not a fundamental human right. Then what is a fundamental human right? The embarrassment, the bullying online.”
