Van Dijk Stunned By Liverpool’s Decision To Sack Arne Slot

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has admitted he was blindsided by the club’s decision to dismiss manager Arne Slot, revealing he only discovered the news through reports after arriving in Amsterdam.

Liverpool parted company with Slot after a disappointing campaign that ended with a fifth-place finish in the Premier League.

The Dutchman’s departure brought an abrupt end to a two-year spell at Anfield, despite having guided the Reds to the league title in his first season after succeeding Jürgen Klopp in June 2024.

The decision has paved the way for former AFC Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola to take charge, with Liverpool’s owners, FSG, already agreeing a deal for the Spaniard.

Speaking after the Netherlands’ 1-0 defeat to Algeria, Van Dijk said he had no prior knowledge of the club’s plans and was not consulted before the final decision was taken.

“That came as a surprise. I spoke to Arne and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff, and I’m grateful for everything they’ve done for me. I know Liverpool will come out of this well,” Van Dijk said.

“I landed in Amsterdam on Saturday, and the news had already been leaked. I then had discussions with the club, but the decision had already been made by then. It’s not as though they asked me for my opinion.”

Van Dijk’s reaction highlights the shock surrounding Slot’s departure, particularly given the success the manager enjoyed during his debut campaign.

After arriving from Dutch football with the difficult task of replacing Klopp, Slot delivered immediate silverware and appeared to have laid the foundations for a new era at Anfield.

However, Liverpool’s form dipped significantly afterwards, with the club missing out on a top-four finish and ultimately prompting a change in direction from the hierarchy.

Despite the turbulence around the manager’s future, Van Dijk remained one of Liverpool’s most reliable performers throughout the season.

The centre-back started all 38 league matches, clocked 3,420 minutes and scored six goals. Two of those strikes came against Aston Villa during the closing stages of the campaign as speculation over Slot’s future intensified.

His influence was even greater during Liverpool’s title-winning 2024-2025 season. The Dutch defender featured in all 60 matches across every competition, accumulated 5,444 minutes, scored six goals and contributed an assist, playing a central role in the club’s success.

Van Dijk who is approaching a decade at Anfield and contracted until 2027, is expected to remain a key figure as Liverpool begin a new chapter under Iraola.
