Elisha Abbo Emerges Labour Party Governorship Candidate
Former Adamawa North senator, Elisha Abbo, has emerged as the Labour Party governorship candidate for Adamawa State after being ratified as the party’s consensus candidate in Yola.
Naija News reports that his endorsement by party stakeholders positions him as Labour Party’s standard bearer ahead of what political observers expect to be a keenly contested governorship election.
Abbo’s emergence comes months after his departure from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he accused the party’s North-East Zonal Vice Chairman and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, of creating what he described as “chaos and confusion” within the party.
Party leaders said his adoption followed consultations among stakeholders aimed at strengthening the Labour Party’s chances in the forthcoming election.
Political analysts believe Abbo’s entry into the governorship race could alter the political landscape in Adamawa State, especially amid complaints in some quarters over the emergence of the APC candidate, Ahmed Galadima Aminu.
Observers say Abbo retains support in parts of Adamawa North and among some youth groups, factors that could influence the dynamics of the election.
Born on May 2, 1976, Abbo became one of Nigeria’s youngest senators after winning election to represent Adamawa North in 2019.
He was initially elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2020. By 2025, he had aligned with the ADC coalition before his latest move to the Labour Party.
Abbo’s political career has also been marked by controversies.
In 2019, a viral video showed him involved in an incident at a shop in Abuja, which generated widespread public criticism and prompted calls for disciplinary action. He later apologised publicly over the incident.
In October 2023, the Court of Appeal removed him from the Senate and declared Amos Yohanna of the PDP as the winner of the Adamawa North senatorial seat.
He was also the subject of a criminal allegation reported in 2025, which he denied, describing it as a politically motivated smear campaign. The matter generated public debate at the time.
Despite the controversies, Abbo has remained active in politics and continues to command attention within Adamawa’s political space.
