CAF Champions League: Enyimba And Remo Stars Suffer Defeat

The reigning Nigeria Professional Football League champions, Enyimba of Aba fell to Al Ahli Benghazi of Libya 4–3 in the first leg of the 2023–2024 CAF Champions League preliminary round.

In the continental match which took place on Sunday, August 20, Chijioke Mboama gave the Peoples Elephants the lead in the third minute, but the Libyans were able to tie the score five minutes later.

Imo Obot, a left back for Al Ahli Benghazi, scored an own goal in the 42nd minute, three minutes before halftime to give the Nigerian team a 2-1 lead before the break.

Eze Ekwutoziam and Murphy Ndukwu’s heartbreaking injury-time goals gave the hosts a 4-3 victory to give the Libyan team a strong advantage going into the second leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary round.

Coach Finidi George now has less than 7 days to prepare the Nigerian champions for the second leg of the tie which is scheduled to take place at the Nest of Champions in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.

Naija News gathered that the second leg clash will kick off at 15:00 (3 p.m. Nigerian time) on Sunday, August 27.

Also, on Sunday, August 20, another Nigerian Professional Football League club competing in the CAF Champions League preliminary round, Remo Stars Sports Club, suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Medeama FC of Ghana.

At 16:00 (4 p.m. Nigerian time) on Sunday, August 27, Remo Stars will host the Ghanaian team in the second leg of the encounter. The NPFL side beat Medeama FC in the tie to stand a chance of progressing to the next round of the continental competition.
