The quarter-final line-up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is now complete after Switzerland beat Colombia 4-3 on penalties in the final Round of 16 tie, sealing the last remaining place in the last eight.
A goalless game in Vancouver could not be settled after 120 minutes, sending the match to penalties. Switzerland kept their composure from the spot to eliminate Colombia and book a quarter-final meeting with Lionel Messi’s Argentina.
France, Morocco, Spain, Belgium, Norway, England and Argentina had already secured their places before Switzerland completed the line-up.
Naija News reports that the knockout stage has delivered several major surprises and dramatic games. England defeated Mexico 3-2 in a thrilling encounter at the Estadio Azteca, while Norway stunned five-time champions Brazil 2-1 with Erling Haaland leading the charge.
Argentina fought back from two goals down to beat Egypt 3-2, ending the Pharaohs’ impressive run. France squeezed past Paraguay with a 1-0 win, Morocco defeated Canada 3-0, Belgium brushed aside the United States 4-1, and Spain claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Portugal thanks to a stoppage-time winner.
The Round of 16 also saw all three tournament co-hosts bow out. Canada were beaten by Morocco, the United States lost heavily to Belgium and Mexico fell to England.
