2026 World Cup: Lionel Scaloni Warns Argentina Against Cape Verde
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni has cautioned his players against taking Cape Verde lightly ahead of their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash.
The reigning world champions will meet the African debutants after Cape Verde became the smallest nation by population to reach the knockout stage of a men’s World Cup.
Few gave Cape Verde any chance of progressing when they were drawn in a difficult Group H alongside Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia. Instead, they defied expectations by earning three successive draws.
A goalless draw against Spain and an entertaining 2-2 draw with Uruguay helped Cape Verde finish as group runners-up and secure a place in the knockout rounds.
Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, topped Group J after an impressive group campaign and head into the tie as favourites.
Despite that, Scaloni insisted his side must treat Cape Verde with the utmost respect.
Speaking after Argentina’s win over Jordan, the coach praised the resilience shown by their next opponents.
“On Cape Verde, I’m not surprised they qualified. They made things very difficult for every opponent they faced. They are a tough team and they’ll make life difficult for us,” the coach said.
“They frustrated Spain, one of the tournament favorites. Uruguay couldn’t beat them, and neither could Saudi Arabia.”
