Super Eagles Defender, Igoh Ogbu Ruled Out Of Portugal Friendly
Nigeria’s preparations for Wednesday’s international friendly against Portugal have suffered a major setback after Super Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu sustained a suspected rupture of his left Achilles tendon during training.
Igoh Ogbu, 26, picked up the injury during Saturday evening’s session and required immediate treatment on the pitch before being withdrawn from further participation.
Ogbu, who plays for Slavia Prague, is expected to undergo additional medical examinations in the coming days to determine the full extent of the damage, although officials within the national team camp fear the injury could keep him out for an extended period.
The setback comes at an unfortunate time for head coach Eric Chelle, who is already dealing with several notable absences ahead of one of Nigeria’s biggest fixtures of the international window.
Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman both withdrew from the squad after demanding club campaigns, while Ola Aina was left out after missing the closing weeks of his season through injury. Ogbu had been expected to play a key role in Chelle’s defensive plans against a strong Portuguese side.
His absence will be particularly felt given his growing influence within the Super Eagles setup. The defender has impressed consistently in Europe and has strengthened his case for a regular starting place with a string of solid performances for Slavia Prague. However, the latest injury adds to a series of fitness setbacks that have disrupted parts of his career at both club and international levels.
The Super Eagles travel to Leiria on the back of encouraging results. The Super Eagles successfully retained the Unity Cup in London after victories over Zimbabwe and Jamaica before earning a 2-2 draw against Poland in Warsaw, a match in which they twice held the lead.
Portugal, meanwhile, have received a timely boost with the arrival of Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, João Neves and Gonçalo Ramos. The quartet joined the national team on Saturday after helping Paris Saint-Germain defeat Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League final. All four are expected to be available for selection, giving coach Roberto Martínez close to a full-strength squad.
The two countries have met only once at senior level. Their previous encounter came in Lisbon on November 17, 2022, when Portugal recorded a commanding 4-0 victory. Bruno Fernandes scored twice, with Ramos and João Mário also on target, while Nigeria missed a penalty through Emmanuel Dennis.
Wednesday’s match will be played at Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria, Portugal.
