Rúben Dias, José Sá Speak Ahead Of Super Eagles Of Nigeria Vs Portugal Clash

Portugal defenders Rúben Dias of Manchester City and goalkeeper José Sá of Wolverhampton Wanderers have highlighted the importance of their upcoming friendly against the Super Eagles of Nigeria as both sides step up preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match is set for next Wednesday at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria. It will be the second meeting between both nations in four years, with Portugal having recorded a 4-0 win in their previous encounter in November 2002.

Portugal are using the fixture, along with another friendly against Chile, to sharpen tactics ahead of their World Cup opener against the Democratic Republic of Congo. Naija News reports that the Congolese side secured qualification after defeating the Super Eagles in the African playoff final.

José Sá said both matches are key to Portugal’s build-up.

“These will be two very important games against Chile and Nigeria to prepare for the World Cup. We are focused on giving our best and preparing well for the first game in the competition,” Sá told A Bola.

Dias, heading to his third World Cup, also stressed the unpredictability of the tournament and the value of every warm-up match.

“Yes, they will be extremely important. This is my third World Cup and I have already experienced firsthand, in various and different circumstances, the difficulty of playing against anyone in the World Cup,” Dias remarked to A Bola.

Portugal will also face Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K at the tournament.

Nigeria’s camp in Lisbon has meanwhile been boosted by the arrival of Alex Iwobi and Christian Akpan as preparations intensify ahead of the friendly.

Alex Iwobi of Fulham joined up after missing the match against Poland, while Akpan of KRC Genk has earned his first call-up following late withdrawals in the squad.

Akpan, relatively unknown on the international stage, will be hoping to make his debut against Portugal.

Samuel Chukwueze has also joined the team after missing the 2-2 draw with Poland as players in camp increased to 22.
