2027 Election: INEC To Release Revised Timetable

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to release a revised timetable and schedule of activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This development was confirmed by the Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, Adedayo Oketola.

Though he didn’t disclose a specific time for the revised timetable, Oketola assured that INEC’s activities would be guided by the laws of the country.

The media aide to the INEC chairman gave the confirmation in a chat with Punch while reacting to the demand of some political parties and stakeholders for the release of a new timetable.

Naija News recalls that INEC recently released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election.

According to the details released on Friday, 13th February, 2026, Presidential and National Assembly elections will be held on February 20, 2027, while the Governorship and State Assembly elections will be held on March 6, 2027.

The Chairman of the commission, Prof. Amupitan, disclosed this development at a news conference in Abuja.

However, certain stakeholders have clamoured for an adjustment of the timetable, pointing out that the proposed dates clashed with the holy month of Ramadan and would affect citizen participation and inclusiveness.

Amid the controversy, the National Assembly last week passed the Electoral Act 2026, which reduced the mandatory notice period for elections from 360 days to 300 days.

The revised Clause 28 states that INEC “shall, not later than 300 days before the day appointed for the holding of an election under this Act, publish a notice in each state of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (a) stating the date of the election; and (b) appointing the place at which nomination papers are to be delivered.”

The act has since been signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.

The amendment is expected to give INEC flexibility to schedule the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections between late December 2026 and January 2027.
