Tension In Kano As Residents Embrace Sit-At-Home After Appeal Court Sacks Gov Abba Yusuf

There is unrest in Kano State following the ruling of the Court of Appeal on Friday, which sacked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Naija News reported earlier that the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja sacked Kabir Yusuf as Governor of Kano. The panel upheld the Tribunal’s verdict led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay, which sacked Yusuf on September 20, 2023.

Recall that in the March 18, 2023 election, Yusuf of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) was declared the winner by the Independent National Electronic Electoral Commission (INEC) with 1,019,602 votes, surpassing Nasiru Gawuna’s 890,705 votes.

However, the All Progressives Congress (APC) took the matter to the Tribunal, alleging electoral malpractice. The APC’s prayer was subsequently granted, and the development has generated tension in the state.

Reports obtained by Naija News revealed that parents and guardians were rushing to schools today to pick their wards home.

A head teacher of one of the private schools in the Normandsland area of Fagge Local Government in Kano told journalists that the parents were worried there could be a crisis over the sack of Governor Yusuf by the Appeal Court.

According to Daily Trust, there has been heightened anxiety among state residents since Thursday (yesterday) when the Appeal Court announced that it would deliver judgment on the much-anticipated governorship election dispute.

It was gathered that there had been panic buying since yesterday as residents feared a curfew might be imposed. Also, some have reportedly imposed a sit-at-home for themselves as they watch happenings around them.

“We are praying for things to go easily without any issues, but for me, I will not even come to the market because you can never tell what will happen.

“I wonder why all this, now, everybody will go to sleep with this in their minds thinking. You will see by tomorrow all the busy streets nearby will be relatively empty. Everybody will sit at home because we have seen what happened when the Tribunal gave its verdict,” A businessman at Kwari market, Yunusa Abdullah, told Daily Trust.

Also speaking, another businessman, Usman Bello, said, “Let them do what they want to do but they should know that God is watching and they have created unnecessary tension among the teeming populace.

“We will not come out to the market tomorrow, you see, they will definitely cheat us as we would not be able to come out and get our daily bread.”
