Rema Wins Big At MTV Europe Music Awards As Burna Boy Loses Three Awards

Nigerian singer, Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, has emerged as the winner of the inaugural “Best Afrobeats” category at the MTV Europe Music Awards.

Naija News understands that the organizers of the awards had cancelled the event due to the ongoing war between Israel and Palestine terrorists, Hamas.

However, the winners were still announced on November 6, 2023. 2023. The category Rema won was newly introduced by the organizers, with nominees including Asake, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, French superstar Aya Nakamura, and Rema.

Rema was adjudged the “Best Afrobeats” winner, while Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz won the ‘Best African Act’ category.

However, Rema and Selena Gomez’s ‘Calm Down’ lost the “Best Collaboration” category to Jung Kook and Latto’s ‘Seven’.

Painfully, Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Burna Boy, lost three awards, including “Best Afrobeats”, “Best African Act’, and “Best Live Performer.”

This came barely two weeks after Burna Boy lost all seven nominations at the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards.

American singer, Taylor Swift led the winners chart with three awards at the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards – Best Video, Best Artist and Best Live.

Wizkid Announces Break From Music

Meanwhile, popular Nigerian singer, Ayodeji Balogun, professionally known as Wizkid, on Sunday, disclosed plans to take time off the music scene.

The Essence crooner stated this in a series of Instagram posts, noting that he would be taking four or five years off the music scene, adding that he is considering taking up football or golf.

Wizkid, who wrote in broken English, stated, “Back in 4 years, make una papa chop him money small or maybe five or I fit still go dey play ball now.

“Or make I start dey play golf. Fifa or wrestling b*tch!” All of una dey craze! Everybody dey mad.

“On some G shit, I hope you mofuckas alright body mind and soul and taking time out to enjoy with your loved ones.”

This won’t be the first time Wizkid will be announcing a break from music.

In 2019, the singer, via his X account, disclosed his plans to take a break from music, tweeting, “Gone till March! Thank you.”
