Akor Adams: Montpellier Manager Surprised Over Nigerian Striker’s Form

Montpellier manager, Michel Der Zakarian said he is surprised over the goalscoring form of Nigerian striker, Akor Adams.

Akor Adams has scored five goals in eight league games to remain tied in second place in the highest goalscorers chart so far in French Ligue 1.

Recall that Adams left Nigerian lower league side Jamba FA to the Norwegian second-division team Sogndal on loan before he made his move permanent in 2018.

After only 38 Eliteserien games, he scored 23 goals, which hastened his promotion to the top division.

Lillestrom had an excellent offensive partnership with Thomas Lehne Olsen. His physicality also caused problems for the defenders he faced.

With 17 goals and three assists in his final season in Norway, he demonstrated that he was a goal scorer, a quality that made Montpellier pay €4.5 million for his services in last summer’s transfer window.

Since he arrived at the French Ligue 1 side, the 23-year-old former Nigeria Under-20 striker has become a prominent member of coach Der Zakarian’s team.

So far this season, only Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint Germain (8 goals), has scored more goals than Akor Adams (5) in the French Ligue 1.

He is tied in second place with Wissam Ben Yedder of Monaco, Mostafa Mohamed of Nantes, and his teammate, Mousa Al-Tamari of Montpellier.

Ahead of their league game against Toulouse at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 29, Montpellier’s manager, told the press how surprised the club is over the goalscoring form of Akor Adams.

He said, “Our surprise has been seeing him score immediately, but that’s football. Andy Delort went a long time without scoring a goal, and Elye Wahi did as well.

“We knew it would take some time to adapt to Adams. He needs to adapt, but others do too, they should want to play with him. We looked back on the match against Rennes and he made many good runs, but he wasn’t fed. Players in possession of the ball should see things and should want to give him the ball, especially in behind.”

Despite the superb goalscoring form of Akor Adams, Montpellier are currently sitting in the 15th spot on the league table with 8 points in 8 games, three points away from the relegation zone.
