Manchester City Beat Sevilla Via Penalties To Win First UEFA Super Cup

Manchester City defeated Spanish La Liga club, Sevilla, to win the 2023 UEFA Super Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

Manchester City came from a goal down to draw with Sevilla and pushed the game into a penalty shootout at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium in Piraeus, Greece earlier today, August 16.

The reigning Europa League winners, Sevilla who didn’t see much of the ball managed to take the lead in the 25th minute courtesy of a strike from Youssef En-Nesyri which was assisted by Argentine left-back Marcos Acuña.

Even though Manchester City enjoyed most of the ball possession, Sevilla managed to finish the first 45 minutes with the lone goal.

It was after the hour mark that Manchester City got back into the game when Cole Palmer slotted in an assist from Rodri, the same player that scored the winner for City in the UEFA Champions League final last season.

After that goal, both teams continue to battle for the winner but they couldn’t get the needed strike. Even the introduction of Julián Álvarez couldn’t change much for Manchester City who enjoyed 74 percent of the ball possession.

Hence, at the end of 90 minutes of regular time, the game went into a penalty shootout. Interestingly, all Pep Guardiola’s players scored their spot-kicks but Sevilla’s 31-year-old Serbian midfielder missed the club’s 5th kick to give Manchester City the UEFA Super Cup.
