James Trafford has joined newly promoted Burnley from Manchester City for a transfer deal worth £19 million.

The 20-year-old English goalkeeper joined Burnley after signing a four-year deal that will keep him at the club until 2027.

James Trafford’s transfer agreement between Manchester City and Burnley came with a 20% sell-on provision and a £15 million buy-back option with an extra £4 million in add-ons.

The £19 million Burnley paid for Trafford is a club-record transfer fee for a goalkeeper surpassing the £15 million paid in 2017 and 2018 for Chris Wood and Ben Gibson, respectively.

Trafford spent his last two seasons on loan at League One clubs Accrington and Bolton. Hence, he has not made any Premier League appearances since he started his professional football.

He made his name in European youth football when England won the European Under-21 Championship earlier this month without conceding a goal.

He is the second goalkeeper to relocate to Turf Moor this summer. Manager Vincent Kompany signed goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux from Leyton Orient earlier in the summer.

Zeki Amdouni, a forward from Switzerland, joined the club from Basel on Wednesday for an undisclosed fee, making him Burnley’s second important acquisition in just two days.

Burnley also added Irish defender Dara O’Shea to their roster this summer, and in May, Jordan Beyer’s loan from Borussia Monchengladbach was made permanent.

James Trafford could have the opportunity of facing his old team, Manchester City on August 11, when Burnley welcome the reigning Premier League champions to Turf Moor for their first league game of the season.
