Jose Peseiro Blames Super Eagles’ Defeat To Guinea Bissau On Officiating

Super Eagles of Nigeria head coach, Jose Peseiro has blamed the decisions of the referee for his team’s stunning home defeat to a lowly ranked Guinea Bissau on Friday.

Jose Peseiro was expected to use the Guinea Bissau team to bounce back from three successive defeats but that didn’t happen as the visiting team smashed the Super Eagles 1-0 at MKO Abiola national stadium, Abuja.

The defeat has pushed Nigeria down to the second spot in Group A of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification table.

After the shocking defeat, the embattled Super Eagles coach who had managed to win just two games in seven matches said the center referee, Kotey Alexander, didn’t do his job effectively.

Jose Peseiro argued that Troyes forward Mama Balde who scored the only goal in the game in the 29th minute ought to be sent off by the Egyptian referee for a foul on Kevin Akoguma.

The Portuguese coach also argued that the referee ought to add more than the five minutes that were added after the regular 90 minutes of action.

“The referee failed to give the Guinea-Bissau player Mama Balde a red card after going in hard on Kevin Akoguma in the second half of the game,” said Peseiro, as quoted by Pulse Sports.

“The referee did not give a penalty to the Super Eagles striker after he was roughly handled in the penalty box.

“The added time given by the referee did not justify the time wasted for the treatment of the Super Eagles defender and I was expecting 10 minutes from the referee.”

The Super Eagles have a chance to redeem themselves when they travel to Guinea Bissau on Monday, March 27 for the return leg. A win for Nigeria in the game that will kick off at 5 PM would return coach Jose Peseiro and his team to the top of Group A with two points above Guinea Bissau.
