A directive has gone out to operators of filling stations, eateries, markets, motor parks and others in Ogun State for them to provide functional public toilets in their facilities going forward.

Naija News gathered that the directive by the Ogun government was part of its move to tackle open defecation in the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya made the pronouncement at the commissioning of ultra-modern biogas energy public toilets at the State Secretariat, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta on Friday.

He said henceforth, officers from his ministry and from all the 20 local councils in the state would be mobilised to enforce the directive for effectiveness.

According to him, it had become important to promote public hygiene and sanitation in public places, and that is why banks, filling stations and others are required to have functional toilets at their facilities to prevent open defecation.

The commissioner also said a warning has gone out to event organisers too to also ensure moveable toilets are available at their events.

Oresanya explained that the availability of functional toilets in public places would discourage residents from defecating just anywhere in open places while they are out of their homes when pressed.

He as well disclosed that about 300 public toilets with solar panels would be provided for residents in all local government areas of the state within the next six months.

The commissioner, while urging residents to utilise the facilities when they are ready next year, noted that the 20 local governments would have no less than 10 public toilets each, while the urban local government areas would have a minimum of 15 to make up the number.
