Over one thousand members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Zamfara State have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2023 elections.

This development was made known in a statement by the APC Publicity Secretary in Zamfara State, Yusuf Idris Gusau.

The defectors include the state PDP women leader, Hajiya Madina Shehu, and some campaign coordinators as well as other prominent persons.

It would be recalled that Shehu upon her defection during a meeting with the Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle had said many others would follow her from PDP into APC.

The statement by Gusau confirming the defections read: “the defection of the state PDP women leader, Hajiya Madina Shehu, and over 1,000 women, including the PDP campaign coordinators is a welcoming development to our party towards the forthcoming election.

“The mass defection has reduced PDP to a party of no structure and increased the ever-glaring chances of the APC at all levels in the state.

The APC added that the PDP governorship candidate in Zamafara, Dr Dauda Lawal Dare, is a political amateur who will suffer a heavy defeat at the polls in 2023.

While welcoming the defectors, the APC promised them a level playing ground in the party.

“We, therefore, wish to welcome the over 1,000 former PDP leaders and their supporters into the APC and reiterate that they will be treated with all fairness which has been the guiding word in our great party,” the statement added.
