All Progressives Congress (APC) is Nigeria’s ruling political party, established in 2013 through a strategic merger of the country’s largest opposition groups. Since unseating the incumbent in 2015, the APC has remained the dominant force in Nigerian politics, currently governed under the “Renewed Hope” mandate.

History & Formation

The APC was born out of a necessity to provide a formidable alternative to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which had governed Nigeria since 1999. In February 2013, four major parties—the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)—signed a merger agreement. The party was officially registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on July 31, 2013.

Current Leadership & 2026 Status

As of February 2026, the party is led by Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, who succeeded Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje following the 14th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in 2025. The party is currently preparing for its 2026 National Convention (scheduled for March 25–28), overseen by a coordination committee chaired by Governor Hope Uzodimma. This convention is pivotal for the party’s internal restructuring ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ideology and Manifesto

The APC’s platform is built on Progressivism. Its core pillars include:

  • National Security: Strengthening the NPF and Armed Forces to combat insurgency.
  • Economic Reform: Leveraging the “Renewed Hope Agenda” for infrastructure and job creation.
  • Anti-Corruption: Enhancing the capacity of the EFCC and ICPC to ensure public accountability.
