1. Enough Is Enough – Buhari Directs ASUU To Call Off Strike, Warns Of Consequences
President Muhammadu Buhari has called on the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to reconsider their position on the prolonged strike, expressing worry that the hiatus will have generational consequences on families, the educational system and future development of the country.
Naija News reports that Buhari made this known on Monday in Daura, Katsina, when he received some governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC), legislators and political leaders at his residence.
In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President said the strike had already taken a toll on the psychology of parents, students and other stakeholders, throwing up many moral issues that already beg for attention.
He noted that the future of the country rests on the quality of educational institutions and education, while assuring that the government understands their position, and negotiations should continue, with students in lecture halls.
2. Tinubu/Shettima Ticket: APC Governors Visit Buhari In Daura
Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress on Monday visited president Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Kastina State.
The Progressives Governors Forum paid a Sallah homage to the president at his residence.
The Governors upon their arrival at the president’s residence went into a closed-door meeting.
The APC Governors after the meeting with Buhari, praised the presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu for choosing former Governor of Borno State, Kassim Shettima as his running mate ahead of the 2023 race.
The Governors who visited President Buhari on Monday include, Aminu Masari of Katsina State, Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State, Abubakar Bello of Niger State, Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, Simon Lalong of Plateau State and Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State.
The Governor of Kebbi State, Bagudu, while speaking after the meeting, said Tinubu-Shettima’s presidency will complement President Buhari’s achievements in the last seven years.
He further stated that the ruling party is working effortlessly to win the forthcoming governorship election in Osun State.
3. Kuje Jailbreak: NDLEA Arrests Escaped Terrorist With Drugs In Abuja
A terrorist who escaped from the Kuje correctional centre (Kuje prison) last week Tuesday has been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in the Federal Capital Territory.
Recall that terrorists last Tuesday attacked the prison, releasing members of the Boko Haram, Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP), and other inmates.
Suleiman Sidi who escaped from prison during the attack was arrested in the early hours of Monday in Abuja.
Sidi’s arrest is coming after Federal Government published the names and pictures of 64 terrorists, declaring them wanted.
The development was confirmed in a statement released by the spokesperson of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi.
According to Babafemi, Sidi was apprehended by operatives of NDLEA at the Area 1 motor park while attempting to board a commercial vehicle to Maiduguri, Borno State.
Wraps of cannabis Sativa were seen on him upon search by operatives of the agency.
4. 2023: Shettima Meets Tinubu After Emergence As APC VP Candidate
Former Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima has spoken on his emergence as the running mate of Bola Tinubu under the All Progressives Congress.
Naija News had earlier reported that Tinubu announced the lawmaker representing Borno Central senatorial district as his running mate.
Shettima in a post on his Facebook page on Monday appreciated the former Governor of Lagos State for picking him as the Vice-Presidential candidate of APC.
The lawmaker met with Tinubu on Monday at the airport in Abuja.
The former Governor of Borno State claimed that he was at an orphanage in Maiduguri when Tinubu announced him as his running mate.
He further stated that the announcement came when he was trying to put a smile on the faces of the children who became orphans because of the Boko Haram attacks.
5. 2023: IPOB Agitation Has Reduced Since Peter Obi’s Emergence – Gumi
Controversial Islamic scholar, Sheikh Abubakar Gumi, on Monday, stated that the 2023 presidential election is on set to take off.
Gumi stated this in a post on his Facebook account while reacting to the choices of presidential candidates under political parties in the country.
The cleric claimed the agitation of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) has reduced since the emergence of Peter Obi as the Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate.
He further stated that the call for the Yoruba Nation has reduced since Bola Tinubu emerged as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress.
Gumi claimed that the agitations across the country are a political gimmick to get power in the 2023 general elections.
6. Atiku Will Be In Osogbo To Lead PDP Governorship Campaign – Spokesman
Paul Ibe, the spokesman for the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has confirmed that his principal is set to cut short his foreign trip to return to the country.
Ibe stated that Atiku had concluded plans to return to Nigeria and lead the mobilisation of the people of Osun state to vote for the PDP governorship candidate in the Osun election, Senator Ademola Adeleke.
He asserted that Atiku would be in Osogbo, the Osun State capital to lead the grand rally of the opposition party ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
The spokesman added that Atiku will also ensure the resolution of all the issues that arose following the conclusion of the nomination processes are addressed.
Ibe told Daily Trust that, “Atiku will lead from the front once he arrives to reinvigorate and ensure the resolution of all the issues that arose following the conclusion of the nomination processes and it will all be addressed.”
7. Tinubu-Shettima: APC Speaks On Resignation Of National Legal Adviser
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied claims that it’s national legal adviser resigned due to the Bola Tinubu-Kashim Shettima presidential ticket.
After the party’s flag bearer, Bola Tinubu unveiled former governor of Borno state, Kashim Shettima, as his running mate on Sunday, an APC member, Daniel Bwala, alleged to be the national legal adviser of the party, informed the public that he was leaving the party.
However, APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said that the claim that Bwala is the party’s legal adviser is erroneous.
He said: “Our attention has been drawn to a false and misleading report circulating on some media platforms that the National Legal Adviser of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has resigned.
“Barr. Ahmad Usman El-Marzuq is, and remains, the National Legal Adviser of APC.
“Barr. Daniel Bwala was not the National Legal Adviser of the Party as erroneously reported.
8. Terrorists Were Paid N800m To Release Seven Abuja-Kaduna Train Captives – Sources
Sources have revealed to newsmen over the weekend that the sum of eight hundred million Naira was paid to the terrorists to secure the release of seven onboard members in the Abuja–Kaduna train attack in March 2022.
Naija News reported earlier that some newly rescued victims of the Abuja-Kaduna train attack were reunited with their families on Saturday.
The lead negotiator, Malam Tukur Mamu who is a Media consultant to a popular Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, confirmed the reunion in a statement on Sunday noting that the captives were happily reunited with their respective families in Kaduna.
Mamu while handing the victims to their respective families, urged Nigerians to give a thumbs up to the executive Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni for the crucial role he played that led to the freedom of the captives.
Vanguard, however, in a report quoted Mamu as saying that they only used the power of dialogue and persuasion during the negotiation, stating clearly that no ransom was paid to secure the release of the captives.
Reports made available by Daily Trust, however, contradicted Mamu’s claim as it quoted sources as saying that money was paid for the freedom of the captives.
It said that the families of each of the captives from Nigeria paid N100 million while the captors pegged the ransom for the Pakistani at N200 million which was also paid.
9. Kaduna Or Katsina? Buhari Reveals Where He Would Retire To After Tenure Ends
President Muhammadu Buhari has told governors and political leaders that he had not been to his house in Daura for close to a year due to the demands of office.
Naija News reports that Buhari made this known on Monday in Daura, Katsina, when he received some governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC), legislators and political leaders at his residence.
In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President said, “the observation that I abandoned my base was made by the Emir of Daura, Dr Faruk Umar Faruk, at the eid prayer ground. He held the microphone and told everyone that the last time I was in Daura was during the Eid-el-Kabir of 2021.”
President Buhari said he would retire to Daura, not Kaduna, where he had a better house.
“In ten to eleven months time, I will come here. I have a better house in Kaduna, but it is too close to Abuja,’’ he said.
10. 2023 Presidency: 22 APC Governors Will Deliver Their States For Tinubu – Uzodimma
The Governor of Imo state Hope Uzodinma has said that all the 22 All Progressives Congress, APC, Governors will deliver their states in the upcoming 2023 elections.
Uzodinma, who alongside eight other governors visited president Muhammadu Buhari in Daura to felicitate with him during the Sallah celebrations told journalists after a closed-door meeting on Monday that the party could count on the governors to deliver their state.
Uzodimma said: “22 Governors will deliver 22 states because they have done very well.”
On the choice of former Borno Governor, Senator Kashim Shetima as Bola Tinubu’s running mate, Uzodimma said it was a collective decision and they are pleased with the outcome.
