The Federal Government on Tuesday, through the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, stated that it’s working on how to regulate social media.
Alhaji Mohammed stated this while speaking at a press conference in Abuja.
The minister disclosed that no responsible government would sit back and allow activities that are capable of destroying the country go unchecked.
“It has reached a level that the government may just no longer fold its arms and allow this to continue,” he said.
Mohammed further stated that no amount of criticism would stop the government from implementing the tougher sanctions for broadcast stations who breach the nation’s broadcast code.
He added that broadcast stations would be sanctioned especially as it concerns the dissemination of fake news as well as inciteful and divisive comments which were approved by President Muhammadu Buhari recently.
The minister charged journalists not to be afraid as the government’s intention is not to gag the media, adding that the intention of the government was to restore sanity to the nation’s airwave.
