The Adamawa State Police Command, has reported that some hoodlums suspected to be armed robbers, may have been responsible for the death of a lecturer in Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Dr Elizabeth Malgwi, 63; and her husband, Dr Mwajim Malgwi, 73.

They were killed on Saturday while on their way back home from their farm. The death of the couple provoked anger across Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

The PPRO of the state Police Command, Othman Abubakar, stated that though the murder was still under investigation, findings by police has shown that it might be a case of armed robbery.

He stated that this was contrary to reports in a section of the media the murder was an attack by Fulani herdsmen.

Abubakar said, “The information we got from our preliminary investigation is that they (couple) went to their farm to pay the workers, and someone among the workers must have alerted the gang, who waylaid them on their way back.

“In the course of evading their assailants, they ran into the trunk of a tree and were stuck; it was there that the robbers shot at both the Malgwis.

“We are still investigating since it has to do with money, probably someone must have whispered to the gunmen who carried out the attacks.

The police and Department of State Services and other security agencies have been called on by a group, Garkida Development Association, to apprehend the killers of the couple.

The National President of the association, Dr Birma Sawa, expressed displeasure with the wanton killings on different parts of the country.

This particular act carried out against our father, brother and member and his wife is one too many. We in the GDA cannot and will not pretend at this time that all is well with the deterioration of security of life and properties of citizens in Adamawa State,” he said.

Sawa explained that it was the constitutional responsibility of security agents to protect the citizens and their properties, insisting that the murderers of Malgwi and his wife must be apprehended and made to face the full wrath of the law.
