NPFL: Rivers United Beat Bendel Insurance To Stay Top As Rangers Thrash Remo Stars [Matchday 29 Results]
Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) leaders Rivers United tightened their grip on the title race on Sunday with a convincing 3-1 win over Bendel Insurance at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
The encounter remained goalless at the break before the hosts stepped up the tempo in the second half.
Former league top scorer Chijioke Mbaoma broke the deadlock eight minutes after the restart, nodding home a corner delivered by Iyowuna Douglas.
Douglas was again the architect of Rivers United’s second goal in the 81st minute, picking out Wisdom Samuel, who finished neatly to double the advantage.
Bendel Insurance pulled one back in the 89th minute, but the hosts had the final say when Samson Obi struck late to seal a comfortable 3-1 win.
The result keeps Rivers United two points clear at the summit with two matches still in hand over closest challengers Rangers International.
Rangers produced a ruthless display in Enugu, thrashing reigning champions Remo Stars 4-1.
Left-back Kenneth Igboke struck early in the fourth minute before Chidozie Iwundu doubled the lead just four minutes later.
Franck Mawuena reduced the deficit for Remo Stars before the break, but Rangers regained control in the second half. Wisdom Ebirim made it three in the 62nd minute before Igboke grabbed his second in stoppage time to wrap up a dominant win.
The defeat leaves Remo Stars bottom of the table with 30 points after 29 matches, having suffered 17 losses this season.
Elsewhere, nine-time champions Enyimba slipped into the relegation zone after a 2-1 loss to Warri Wolves.
In Kano, a lone strike from Ahmed Musa handed Kano Pillars a narrow 1-0 derby win over Barau FC, lifting the former champions two points clear of the relegation zone.
