Simeone Challenges Lookman To Offer More

Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone has urged Nigeria forward Ademola Lookman to broaden his influence beyond goals, insisting the attacker must contribute more to the team’s overall structure.

Lookman has made a lively start to life in the Spanish capital following his €35 million switch from Atalanta BC in January. The Super Eagles star has been involved in six goals in just a handful of matches, including a clinical finish in Saturday’s 4-2 victory over RCD Espanyol.

That strike saw him match a long-standing record set by Luis Suárez for the most productive start to an Atlético career in statistical terms.

Yet Simeone, never one to be carried away by numbers alone, made it clear that goals are only part of the picture.

“Lookman brings us goals, honestly, more goals than overall play right now,” he said.

“He can still improve his build-up play and his defensive work. We need him to adapt to the team’s philosophy in those aspects.

“His attitude suggests he wants to improve as a footballer. He has that natural instinct; those goals are no coincidence. But we also need more from him in the collective game.”

Simeone has built his reputation on discipline, organisation and relentless work without the ball. At Atlético, flair is welcomed, but only when it fits within a well-drilled system. Every player is expected to defend, press and sacrifice for the side.
