An airport in the US state of Florida is set to be renamed after President Donald Trump following the approval of a bill by the state legislature on Thursday, February 19.
The Republican-controlled Florida legislature passed the measure to rename Palm Beach International Airport as the “President Donald J. Trump International Airport,” according to official state records.
Governor Ron DeSantis, once considered a political rival of Trump, is widely expected to sign the bill into law.
Naija News reports that the airport is located in Palm Beach, a town renowned for its sandy beaches and sprawling luxury estates. It sits just minutes away from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, further underscoring the symbolic nature of the move.
However, the renaming will also require approval from the Federal Aviation Administration before it can formally take effect.
If finalised, the airport would become one of the most prominent public facilities to bear the president’s name.
Trump, a real estate mogul long known for emblazoning his name on buildings across the globe, has pursued what observers describe as an unprecedented image and branding campaign during his time in public life.
The airport decision would mark the latest in a series of efforts to attach his name to major institutions.
In December, the president’s handpicked board of the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts, an arts complex and memorial to former President John F. Kennedy, voted to rename itself the “Trump-Kennedy Centre.”
US media reports indicate that Trump has also sought to rename New York’s Penn Station and Washington’s Dulles International Airport after himself. However, those attempts were reportedly rebuffed.
Beyond infrastructure, the administration has also explored commemorative avenues. The Treasury Department confirmed reports that draft designs have been prepared for a commemorative $1 coin featuring Trump’s image.
The proposal has drawn attention, as US law prohibits the depiction of a sitting or living president on the nation’s currency.
As the Florida measure advances, attention now turns to the Federal Aviation Administration and Governor DeSantis’ expected assent, steps that would clear the final hurdles for the airport’s renaming.
