Eric Chelle Eyes Foreign-Born Stars For Super Eagles

Head coach Eric Chelle has begun reshaping the Super Eagles with a clear message that Nigeria will not turn its back on players born abroad who are eager to wear the green and white.

The Malian manager is understood to be working behind the scenes to strengthen his options ahead of the next international window, with several dual-nationality footballers expressing interest in committing their futures to Nigeria.

So far, Chelle has secured commitments from defenders Felix Agu and Ryan Alebiosu, along with Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo. The recruitment drive appears far from over. Reports suggest that as many as five other eligible players are currently in discussions with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The latest name to join the conversation is Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez. The 24-year-old centre-back, born in London to Nigerian parents, has reportedly pledged his international allegiance to Nigeria after an impressive run of form in Scotland.

Fernandez has been one of Rangers’ standout performers this season, scoring four goals in 17 league appearances and claiming the club’s Player of the Month award for January. His commanding displays at the back are said to have attracted interest from German side Borussia Dortmund during the January transfer window.

Speaking about the influx of foreign-born players, Chelle made it clear that selection will be based on merit rather than sentiment.

“We have a couple of players who were born abroad, who want to play for the team and we are looking at how they will fit in. We can’t bring all of them into the team,” Chelle said in quotes shared by Super Eagles Supporters Club (@official_esclub on 𝕏).

“We will however pick those that we know can bring competition to the team, improve the team and also fit our game project.”

Nigeria’s squad at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, where the Super Eagles finished third, already reflected a blend of homegrown and foreign-raised talent. Players such as Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman, Ryan Alebiosu and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru all featured prominently in the tournament.

Chelle’s current strategy suggests continuity rather than a complete overhaul. The aim appears to be healthy competition across positions while preserving tactical balance within the team.

With the March international window approaching, attention will now turn to Chelle’s squad list and whether Fernandez and other prospective additions make the cut.
