Morocco Goalie Hails Super Eagles As European Clubs Rally Behind Nigeria After AFCON Semi-final Exit
Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou has paid tribute to the Super Eagles for what he described as a very strong display during Wednesday night’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final, following Nigeria’s painful exit on penalties.
Naija News reports that the tie finished goalless after 120 minutes at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah, with Morocco eventually sealing a 4-2 win in the shoot-out.
Bounou emerged as the hero for the Atlas Lions, saving spot-kicks from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi to earn the man-of-the-match award.
Speaking after the game, the 34-year-old shot-stopper praised both the occasion and the quality of Nigeria’s performance.
“The atmosphere during the match was wonderful,” Bounou said. “I thank all the fans who supported us. The players did what was required in a match that wasn’t easy at all, and the opponent delivered a very strong performance.
“I would like to thank the coach, Walid Regragui, who prepared us very well for this semifinal match, and I also thank all my teammates.”
Bounou, who plays his club football with Al-Hilal, will now turn his focus to the final, where Morocco face Senegal at 8 p.m. on Sunday, January 18.
Despite the disappointment of elimination, Nigeria’s effort drew widespread praise, including from European clubs linked to members of the Super Eagles squad.
Sevilla, home to Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke, acknowledged the result in a brief message, noting that Nigeria had been defeated by Morocco in the semi-final.
Fulham, who count Samuel Chukwueze, Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi among their players, struck a more emotional tone. “Heartbreak for Nigeria. We’re still so proud of our boys after an incredible tournament,” the Premier League side wrote.
In the Championship, Birmingham City singled out Bright Osayi-Samuel for special praise, highlighting his tireless display. “So proud. A monumental shift from @Bright_097 as he played 120 minutes in tonight’s #AFCON semi-final, eventually losing on penalties to Morocco,” the club posted.
Brentford also offered words of encouragement to Frank Onyeka, saying: “Hold your head high, Frank. You gave it everything.”
The tournament is not completely over for the Super Eagles. They will face Egypt in the losers’ final at 5 p.m. on Saturday, January 17.
