Ogenyi Onazi Calls For Crackdown On Drunk Driving After Narrow Escape In Lagos

Former Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has urged the authorities to take urgent action against drunk driving in Lagos after revealing that he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal accident involving intoxicated motorists.

Onazi raised the alarm on Monday via Instagram, recounting a frightening incident from the previous night and warning that reckless driving under the influence is becoming an increasingly dangerous menace on Lagos roads.

The 33-year-old, who was part of Nigeria’s triumphant squad at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), said the situation could easily have ended in tragedy and insisted that tougher measures are long overdue.

“The government has to do something about drunk people driving in Lagos,” Onazi wrote.

“Almost lost my life last night with two drunk boys in the car.”

He called on the government and relevant agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps, to strengthen enforcement and introduce stiffer penalties to deter offenders, stressing that lives continue to be put at risk by unchecked drunk driving.

Onazi enjoyed a notable international career with Nigeria, representing the country at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and featuring in all four matches at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where the Super Eagles were knocked out by France in the round of 16.

He was also included in Nigeria’s squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but missed the tournament due to injury.
