128 Die In Another Earthquake In Nepal

According to authorities in Kathmandu, a strong earthquake in Nepal has resulted in the deaths of at least 128 individuals.

Naija News learned that scores of people also sustained degrees of injuries from the earthquake.

The local administration representative in the Jajarkot district, near the epicenter of the quake, has since expressed concerns that the number of victims may increase.

However, the exact number of casualties in other parts of the mountainous region could not be ascertained at the time of filing this report.

The National Earthquake Monitoring Centre (NEMRC) has measured the quake which happened on Friday to have a magnitude of 6.4, occurring at 11:47 pm (1802 GMT).

However, the United States Geological Survey has estimated the magnitude to be 5.6.

Following the initial earthquake, the area experienced at least three aftershocks within the next hour, each with a magnitude of at least 4.2. The impact of the quake was also felt in northern India, including the capital city of New Delhi, as reported by the Times of India and other Indian media outlets.

The Himalayan region, where Nepal is located, is geologically extremely active. The Indian continental plate is shifting under the Eurasian plate at a rate of around two centimeters per year – which repeatedly leads to strong earthquakes.

Naija News understands that Nepal experienced a particularly severe earthquake in 2015 which shook the area around the capital Kathmandu and caused numerous buildings to collapse.
