Arsenal suffered a huge setback in their quest to contend for the Premier League title as they recorded their first defeat of the season against Newcastle United today, November 4.

Ahead of the Premier League game at St. James Park, bookmakers gave Arsenal a bigger chance of beating Newcastle United due to their unbeaten run in the Premier League so far this season.

Unfortunately, coach Mikel Arteta and his boys brought their Carabao Cup misfortunes to the Premier League campaign.

Recall that on Wednesday, November 1, Arsenal suffered an unexpected defeat at the hands of West Ham United to end their journey in the Carabao Cup.

But that was not expected to affect their Premier League form and it was almost so until in the second half after the first half ended in a goalless draw.

In the 64th minute, Arsenal led their guard down as Anthony Gordon scored the opener that ended up becoming the winning goal of the match.

Gordon tapped the ball into an empty net after Joe Willock crossed the ball into Arsenal’s penalty box and Joelinton kept Gunners’ goalkeeper David Raya too busy to stop the ball from rolling into the net.

After the goal, the Video Assistant Referee had to run a check on the build-up to the goal and whether Gordon was offside or not. At the end of the check which lasted for four minutes, the goal stood.

The 1-0 win left Arsenal in the third spot on the league table with 24 points in 11 games, three points below first-placed Manchester City, and two points below Tottenham Hotspur who are playing their matchday 11 game against Chelsea on Monday.

As for Newcastle United, the win has pushed them to the 6th spot on the league table with 20 points in 11 games, three points away from the top four.
