PDP Speaks On Plot To Delay Supreme Court Judgement In Suit Against Shettima

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the appointment of Etekarnba Umoren as the Residential Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Akwa Ibom State.

The Senate had on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of  Umoren and six others as Residential Electoral Commissioners  (RECs).

Addressing a press conference at the PDP Headquarters on Thursday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said Umoren is a card-carrying member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Displaying the picture of Umoren in full-fledged All Progressive Congress (APC) regalia, Ologungba stated that the new Akwa Ibom REC has also participated in various campaigns involving the party in the state.

Ologunagba called on President Bola Tinubu to appoint a neutral person as REC in Akwa Ibom, saying Umoren is partisan and not fit to hold any office in INEC.

He said: “The new Akwa Ibom REC is a cap-wearing, cloth-wearing and dress-wearing member of the APC who has been at APC campaigns in various elections.”

Ologunagba said Section 141 of the Electoral Act 2022 is clear on the appointment of REC as any card-carrying member of any political party must not be appointed as INEC official.
