Super Falcons forward, Onyi Echegini, is excited to score against a women’s football team, Pittsburgh Panthers, coached by the national team’s head coach. Randy Waldrum.

Waldrum is combining his role as Super Falcons head coach with the role of coaching Pittsburgh Panthers women, a football team that plays in NCAA Division 1 women’s college soccer.

On Saturday, coach Waldrum led Pittsburgh to take on the Florida State women’s soccer team, and the game ended in a 3-2 victory for the Florida side.

Interestingly, Echegini, who had the opportunity to play for the Super Falcons of Nigeria through Waldrum, scored in the game to hand Pittsburgh a distasteful defeat.

Recall that Echegini was part of the Super Falcons team that made it to the round of 16 in the 2023 Women’s World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand. With her help, the team recorded a significant victory over the co-hosts and recorded two draws against Canada and the Republic of Ireland.

About two months after the tournament, she faced her national team coach in club football and helped her club to maintain its 12-game unbeaten streak.

After the game, Onyi Echegini said, “It always feels good when I can do something for my team.

“It is a nice feeling to score against my coach in Nigeria, but honestly, I want to do whatever I can to help the team win.”

While Waldrum said, “She’s very good around the goal, but we didn’t close her. We just stayed off of her. Our defenders 2 yards away and never stepped to close it. A good player like her will punish you if you don’t do that”.
