Stephan El Shaarawy, who is having a very tough 2023-2024 season so far, came to Roma’s rescue earlier today, October 22, when all hope was lost.

During the Roma vs Monza Serie A clash in Rome earlier today, coach Jose Mourinho decided to start El Shaarawy from the bench as his team struggled to break Monza’s defence.

In the 63rd minute, the Portuguese tactician brought in the 30-year-old Italian winger to pair with Romelu Lukaku up front. Then, the game was still a barren draw.

The introduction of El Shaarawy, who is also known as Il Faraone, changed the nature of the game and landed Roma the win in the 90th minute.

While celebrating the goal, the Italian forward was seen crying. Many thought the reason for his weeping was because he finally scored a goal after seven league matches so far this season.

However, during the post-game, Il Faraone told reporters that he was crying over betting allegations slammed on him despite being “clean”.

He said, “I’ve been accused of being involved in the betting scandal by the press… it hurts, it was completely fake”.

“I love this sport, I respect football. I’d never do something like that — I feel clean”.

Note that El Shaarawy is one of the Italian players who have been accused of breaching betting rules in Italy. Other notable names indicted in the scandal include Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli, Sandro Tonali of Newcastle United, and Nicolo Zaniolo of Aston Villa.

The Italian Federal Prosecutor’s Office claimed that the aforementioned players are part of the 40 Italian players involved in the betting scandal.
