Samuel Anyanwu: Meet PDP Governorship Candidate In Imo State

Samuel Anyanwu is the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming Imo state gubernatorial election scheduled to take place on 11 November 2023.

Samuel Anyanwu is going into the election against the incumbent governor, Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Labour Party candidate, Athan Achonu, and Tony Ejiogu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The governorship election in Imo state had to take place on October 11 instead of March 18, 2023, in which most of the other states across the country elected their governors, because of the delay in the swearing-in of the incumbent governor, Uzodinma.

Who is Samuel Anyanwu?

Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu, simply known as Samuel Anyanwu or Sam Daddy, was born in Obodo Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State on 18 June 1965 which means that he is currently 58 years old.

Sam Daddy is a Nigerian politician who occupied the Imo East Senatorial District seat in the eighth National Assembly on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party. He held the position of National Secretary for the South East Zone of the People’s Democratic Party and he is currently running for the governorship seat of Imo state under the platform of the PDP.

Samuel Anyanwu was born into the family of the late Chief Sab Anyanwu in Obodo Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo state. He has three children with his wife Florence Olachi Anywanu (née Madumere).

Samuel Anyanwu had his First School Leaving Certificate at the Road Primary School, Abia in 1977. From there, he earned his Senior Secondary School Certificate at the Iho-Dimeze Secondary School, Owerri, Imo state in 1985.

Anyanwu proceeded to his tertiary education at the University of Port Harcourt where he obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science and Administrative Studies in 2001.

Sam Daddy went on to obtain a Masters Degree in Political Administration from the University of Port Harcourt before he went for further studies at the University of Cambridge, Judge Business School and Harvard University Kennedy School.

The political profile of Samuel Anyanwu

Anyanwu became well-known in 2004 after being elected Chairman of the Ikeduru Local Government Area in Imo State, a position he held until 2007.

Subsequently, Anyanwu was elected to represent his local government in the Imo State House of Assembly while running on the PDP ticket. He served in this capacity for two terms between 2007 and 2015.

As a state legislator, Anyanwu presided over the House Committees on Public Accounts, Finance, and Commerce & Industry. He also held the position of vice chairman for the privileges, petitions, and ethics committee in the house.

In 2015, Anyanwu ran for the Imo East senate seat. He won the election while flying the PDP flag.

During the eighth National Assembly, Anyanwu held the vice chairmanships of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, the Senate Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariffs, and the Senate Committee on Marine Transport. He was also the Senate Committee’s Chairman for Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.

Anyanwu declared his intention to seek the PDP nomination for governor of Imo State in the 2019 elections but lost it to Emeka Ihedioha.

Afterward, he was chosen as the PDP South East Zone’s national secretary consensus candidate in 2021 and emerged winner, a seat he is still occupying at the time of writing this report.

Amidst that, Anyanwu is currently the PDP’s governorship candidate in the forthcoming Imo state gubernatorial election scheduled for November 11, 2023.
