Elijah Adebayo Tired Of Racism In Premier League – Luton Town

Newly promoted Premier League club, Luton Town, issued a statement on Tuesday, October 10, to claim that Nigerian-born striker Elijah Adebayo is “tired” of racism.

Elijah Adebayo has been a Luton Town player since February 1, 2021, when he joined the club while they were still playing in the EFL Championship.

The 25-year-old striker who is eligible to play for the Three Lions of England and the Super Eagles of Nigeria was subjected to racial abuse on social media after Tottenham Hotspur defeated Luton Town 1-0 at home on October 7.

Spurs got the victory with a 52nd-minute strike from Dutch defender Micky van de Ven even though the visitors played with a man-down for the rest of the second 45 minutes.

Due to the embarrassing defeat at the Kenilworth Road, some fans of the newly promoted club who are expecting more from their striker, Adebayo, decided to racially abuse him online.

The racial attack came after Adebayo managed to score just once in eight Premier League games as Luton are currently occupying the 17th spot with 4 points in 8 games, on equal points with Burnley who are in the relegation zone.

In reaction to the racial abuse Elijah Adebayo has been subjected to, Luton confirmed in a statement that Instagram is where the “vile, cowardly act of online abuse” was posted.

The club has informed the Premier League, the Bedfordshire Police, and Instagram’s parent company, Meta, about the attack on the player.

The Premier League club said, “We have spoken to Elijah to offer him our support.

“But do you know what the sad thing is? He said it’s happened so many times now that he can’t be bothered to report or respond to discrimination anymore. He’s tired of it.”

Premier League players are expected to take a unified stance against discrimination throughout the forthcoming round of Premier League games, as they did in all 10 of the league’s games last weekend.

Luton Town added: “We are now treating this as abuse against the club.

“We have had enough of saying enough is enough.

“So we will continue to fight against this heinous, obnoxious, narrow-minded, and bigoted behaviour.

“We will, of course, always stand up for anyone at Luton Town who suffers at the hands of such backward and utterly deplorable attitudes.

“We will continue to do our bit. For everyone.”
