After failing to qualify for the 2023-2024 CAF Champions League group stage, Enyimba Football Club of Aba will feature in the first edition of the African Football League.

Recall that Enyimba who won the 2022-2023 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), were paired with Ahly Benghazi of Libya in the Preliminary stage of the Champions League but couldn’t progress after two-legged affairs.

The two-time CAF Champions League winners lost the first leg 4-3 in Libya and drew the second leg in Nigeria to end their hope of playing in the money-spinning stage of the competition.

However, Enyimba’s hope of playing in the continent has been rekindled as the governing body of football in Africa, CAF, has added them to the eight clubs that will feature in the first edition of the African Football League.

The African Football League (AFL) is jointly organized by the world football governing body, FIFA, and CAF.

Naija News gathered that the eight teams that will participate in the AFL are selected from three African Regional Blocks: the North Region, the Central-West Region, and the South-East Region.

Enyimba and TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo are selected from the Central-West Region.

The Southeast Region produced Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa, Angola’s Atlético Petróleos de Lu from Uganda, and Tanzania’s Simba Sports Club.

While the North Region produced the reigning African champions Al Ahly of Egypt, Tunisia’s Esperance, and Raja Casablanca of Morocco.

CAF will host the draw for the African Football League in Cairo, Egypt, on Saturday, September 2.

Dar es Salaam in Tanzania will host the tournament from October 20, 2023, and it will last for four weeks.
