A Police Inspector and an operative of the Rivers State Police Command has been shot and killed in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Naija News gathered that the sad incident occurred around the popular Landmark hotel at Olu Obasanjo Road on Friday night.

It was learned that the male police orderly was escorting his principal when he was shot at, with the assailants escaping in a grey-coloured 2005 Toyota Corolla car.

The assailants reportedly made away with the inspector’s AK-47 rifle and beret.

The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident in a short statement made available to reporters on Saturday afternoon.

She stated that an investigation had commenced to arrest the fleeing hoodlums and recover the rifle.

The police spokesperson added that the corpse of the inspector had been deposited at the Military Hospital in Port Harcourt for autopsy.

She said: “At about 2030hrs, information was received that one inspector ‘m’ attached to Department of Operations, Yenegoa Bayelsa State, was fatally shot on the head while escorting his principal around Landmark Hotel at Oroworukwo-Olu Obasanjo Port Harcourt.

“His rifle and beret were carted away. Patrol teams were immediately mobilized to the scene. Effort is ongoing to arrest the fleeing hoodlums and recover the rifle. The corpse of the victim has been deposited at Military Hospital Port Harcourt for autopsy. Further development will be communicated.”
