NFF Reacts As Super Falcons Crash Out Of World Cup

The world football governing body, FIFA, has rated the Super Falcons of Nigeria as the tenth-best team in the just concluded 2023 Women’s World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Nigeria is the only African country that made it to the top ten list of the best teams in the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Ahead of the tournament, the Super Falcons were not given any chance of qualifying from Group B which featured the co-hosts, Australia who are ranked 7th in the FIFA women’s ranking, the reigning Olympics champions Canada who are ranked 10th in the world, and the Republic of Ireland who are ranked 22nd in the world.

Despite issues related to unpaid bonuses, the Super Falcons stunned their doubters as they opened their campaign with a 0-0 draw against Canada.

They went on to beat Australia 3-2 in their second group-stage game and ended the first round of the tournament with a 0-0 draw against the Republic of Ireland.

Those results were enough to help Nigeria finish in second place in Group B and booked a place in the round of 16.

Unfortunately, they met unbeaten England in the next round and the 40th-ranked team in the world were able to draw with the reigning European champions in both the regular 90 minutes and 30 minutes of extra time.

At the end of the thrilling encounter, England knocked out Nigeria 4-2 via penalties. But Super Falcons’ were celebrated especially in Nigeria for their resilience, doggedness, and determination to prove their doubters wrong.

To crown it all up, the world football governing body has recognized the Super Falcons as the 10th-best team in the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
