Randy Waldrum Insists Super Falcons Aim To Qualify For 2nd Round In 2023 World Cup

The Super Falcons’ head coach, Randy Waldrum has insisted that the primary target of the team in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup is for the team to make it out of the group stage of the competition co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Coach Randy Waldrum and his girls are paired alongside the reigning Olympics champions, Canada, the tournament’s co-host, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland.

The Super Falcons will commence their campaign at the tournament against Canada on Friday, July 21. The kickoff time is 03:30.

Ahead of the crucial game, Randy Waldrum maintains that he is focused on his team doing well against Canada.

The nine-time African winners will be aiming to defeat their North American opponents to keep their perfect World Cup record against North Americans and win their second game against the Canadians.

The two teams have squared off four times in all competitions, with Canada coming out on top twice (in friendlies), and the Falcons managing a win and a tie during the World Cup.

In contrast to the Falcons’ three victories and two losses in their previous five games, the Canadians had only mustered one win, one draw, and three losses.

Randy Waldrum hasn’t helped the Super Falcons to achieve much on the world stage since he became the country’s head coach in 2020 and he is hoping to make an impact in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup which is his first as a coach.

When Punch asked the 66-year-old American tactician about the team’s readiness for the tournament, Waldrum said, “The team has been training well. All focus has been on Canada.

“I think the expectation is to get out of the group, that hasn’t changed. One thing I know is that the players have given us everything in the past few days and we will continue to do that until Friday. We will be proud and make you all proud as well.”
