Nottingham Forest and Super Eagles of Nigeria forward, Taiwo Awoniyi has wished the Super Falcons success ahead of their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup opener.

On Friday, July 21, the Super Falcons of Nigeria will commence their campaign in the Women’s World Cup against the reigning Olympics champions Canada.

The Group B match will kick off at 03:30 at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium in Australia.

Super Eagles coach, Randy Waldrum intends to start on a good note by defeating the Canadian team in the opening game of the World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Despite dominating the continent and winning nine Women’s Africa Cup of Nations championships, Nigeria has never progressed beyond the quarterfinal stage of the competition. Their best performance was in 1999 when they made it to the quarterfinals.

Since then, they have never progressed past the round of 16 in the competition. However, they would strive to do a better job this time and they would need a lot of goodwill to do that.

Ahead of their opening game, Taiwo Awoniyi who helped Nottingham Forest to escape relegation in the 2022-2023 Premier League season, believes the Super Falcons will make Nigerians proud at the tournament.

Awoniyi was quoted by Eagles Tracker saying, “I wish the Super Falcons all the very best in the World”,

“I believe you can do it, and you’re going to make everyone in the country proud. Go, girls!”

After the clash against Canada on Friday, the Super Falcons will take on the co-host Australia, on July 27. Their last group game in the tournament will be against the Republic of Ireland on July 31.
