Manchester United midfielder, Bruno Fernandes has been named the permanent captain of the team days after the club stripped Harry Maguire of the captain armband.

Harry Maguire confirmed on social media on Sunday that Erik ten Hag had relieved him of his position as the team’s captain.

Since then, there have been speculations that Bruno Fernandes who is one of the assistant captains to Maguire would be named the club’s permanent captain.

On Thursday, July 20, Manchester United confirmed that the 28-year-old Portuguese midfielder has been named the successor of the England international.

A statement from the club reads, “Bruno Fernandes has been named as the new club captain of Manchester United.

“The Portuguese midfielder has already worn the armband for United on numerous occasions and Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he will now lead the team permanently.”

Last season, Fernandes made 37 appearances in all competitions, including 26 times while standing in for Maguire as United’s captain.

Maguire lost his place in United’s starting eleven, after Man United’s embarrassing 4-0 loss to Brentford in August 2022, and Fernandes took over for the rest of the season.

The former Leicester City defender started just eight Premier League games last season after being present in every game before Ten Hag’s arrival.

While confirming that coach Ten Hag has stripped him of the captain armband on Sunday, Maguire stressed that he would support anyone who succeeds him.

“I will always be grateful to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for first giving me the responsibility and I wish whoever now takes it on every success and they will have my full support”, the England international tweeted.
