Nigeria Professional Football League club, Rivers United completed a double over their Congolese opponents Motema Pembe on Thursday.

The Congolese side traveled to the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo for the return leg of the Confederation Cup group stage game and got spanked by the rejuvenated Rivers United.

Naija News recalls that in the first leg of the tie, Rivers United defeated Motema Pembe 1-0 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo courtesy of a goal from Ghanian superstar Paul Acquah.

In the return leg, Acquah continued with his prolific form by not just helping Rivers to win the tie, but he scored a hat-trick to give the Nigerian side the three maximum points in front of the home fans.

Williams Ukeme’s free-kick was headed in by the Ghanaian superstar shortly before halftime, and he added a second goal 10 minutes into the second half with yet another outstanding effort.

After Mydo Yallet had cut the visitors’ deficit in half, Acquah scored his third goal with an incredible shot in stoppage time to give the Pride of Rivers their third victory in the Confederation Cup Group stage.

With the 3-1 win in Uyo, the NPFL reigning champions defeated their gusts 4-1 on an aggregate to remain the leaders of Group B.

Rivers United, who had nine points after four games, regained a two-point lead in the standings, courtesy of the win. Pembe is firmly established at the bottom of the group with just two points after four games, while ASEC Mimosas are in second position with seven points.

On Sunday, March 19, Rivers United will play their next Confederation Cup game against Diable Noirs at home.
