2023 Presidential Candidates

A chieftain of the Labour Party (LP), Wale Okunniyi, has spoken on the chances of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, winning the 2023 election ahead of candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

Okunniyi, who appeared live today on Channels Television’s election programme tagged ‘The 2023 Verdict’, said his candidate would have won the poll at 12:00PM before the normal election closing time, Naija News reports.

The politician said the Labour Party’s organic membership and support base gives him confidence that the former Governor of Anambra State would win the Saturday polls.

Okunniyi said: “My optimism tells me that by the first ballot [Peter Obi will win] straight. My analyses give me that optimism and the level of hard work some of us have put in. We will be shocked that by 12 noon, it will be clear that we have won.”

“I am telling you what I have analysed,” he stressed during the interview.

Naija News understands that Okunniyi is the Head of Grassroots Mobilization of the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Council (PCC).

In his further argument, Okunniyi said: “It may not be official, but you will know now when there is a trend.

“By 2:30 pm when voting ends, it is to collate. If you are in a polling unit, for instance, and you see the trend, and you have canvassers, information would have gotten to you.”

Okunniyi maintained that with the enthusiasm shown so far by Nigerians, voting should end early Saturday.

“In my polling unit, what has happened so far is that in three hours, it is clear [the winner is known], and the INEC officials would just be playing,” he continued.

Labour Party Senatorial Candidate, Five Others Killed, Burnt In Enugu

Meanwhile, the senatorial candidate of the Labour Party for Enugu East senatorial district, Oyibo Chukwu, has been killed by unknown gunmen and burnt.

Naija News reports that the gunmen also killed five supporters who were with him inside his car. The incident happened at Amechi Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area on Wednesday evening.

The governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Chijioke Edeoga, who confirmed the incident to Punch, said that the gunmen shot him inside his vehicle with five other people with him and set the car ablaze.

Edeoga further stated that their party members are being targeted for assassination by their opposition ahead of the 2023 general elections.

He noted that the political parties feel threatened by the presence of the Labour Party in the state.

According to Edeoga, the opposition parties are scared that they might lose the Saturday election.

He said, “It is true that our senatorial candidate for Enugu East senatorial district for Saturday’s election has been killed. They (gunmen) shot him and five others and set them ablaze.

“Our party members are being targeted for assassination by political parties that felt threatened by the rise of the Labour Party in the state and are afraid they may lose Saturday’s election.”
