Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp led his team to Gtech Community Stadium to take on Brentford on Monday and the hosts stunned the visitors.

After the 3-1 defeat in the hands of Brentford, coach Jurgen Klopp claimed that the hosts ‘stretched the rules’ at set-pieces during the game.

It became obvious that it was going to be a difficult night for Liverpool when Ibrahima Konate scored an own-goal in the 19th minute.

After the unfortunate goal, Liverpool tried to push for an equalizer, instead of that, Brentford doubled their lead in the 42nd minute through Yoane Wissa’s strike.

It was until the second half that Liverpool became more effective but they had to wait until the 50th minute to get a goal back.

Unfortunately, that could not motivate Liverpool enough to push for a complete comeback. Hence, Brentford finished the job in the 84th minute thanks to Bryan Mbeumo’s strike.

The defeat pushed Liverpool down to the 6th spot on the league table with 28 points in 17 games, 7 points below fourth-placed Manchester United.

During the game, Liverpool conceded three goals from set-pieces, and the VAR disallowed two of the goals over an offside offence.

Even though Liverpool’s defense failed to deal with the set-pieces, coach Klopp blamed the referees for not punishing Brentford players for allegedly grappling and pushing during the game.

He said: ‘They stretch the rules in these moments. They are really pushing, really holding. The refs…that’s obviously what you can do.’

He added: ‘They stretch the rules in offensive set pieces. Don’t get me wrong it’s smart but they do. If you single out the situations you will find five fouls but it is so chaotic nobody sees it. But it is what they do and it is really good.’

In response to Jurgen Klopp’s allegation, the coach of Brentford, Thomas Frank said: ‘I guess we have some very good refs. We have four at the pitch and a VAR. It has never been more difficult to score a goal. We had two disallowed today.’

Liverpool’s next match is EFL Cup third-round game against Wolves on Saturday, January 7. The game will kick off at 21:00. Jurgen Klopp and his boys will return to Premier League action on January 14 against Brighton.
