Nigerians React As Atiku, Wike Meet Over PDP Crisis

The Rivers State Governor and former presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nyesom Wike, reiterated that he would keep his promise to support the party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar.

Recall that on May 28, 2022, shortly before voting commenced at the special national convention of the PDP to elect the party’s presidential standard bearer, Wike promised to support anyone that emerge victorious from among the aspirants.

After the election held at the MKO Abiola Stadium in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), former vice president Atiku won the presidential primary election with 371 votes to beat his closest challenger, Wike who polled 237 votes.

Hours later, Atiku visited the Rivers governor at his Abuja residence to offer a hand of fellowship and to solicit his support for the 2023 presidential election.

Reacting to Atiku’s visit in a post on his verified Facebook page, governor Wike said the PDP cannot be abandoned, hence he will fully support the former vice president as promised.

He wrote: “I made a vow to the Official Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Nigeria that I will support whoever emerges from the #PDPPresidentialPrimaries and I am not going to go back on my word.

“We cannot abandon the PDP, we will be fully supporting Atiku Abubakar.”

However, Wike and four other PDP aggrieved governors have withdrawn their support for Atiku, stating the party’s flagbearer and the National Chairman cannot come from the same zone (North).

The governors also known as G5 have asked the PDP national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, to resign from office in the interest of equity, justice and fairness.
