Enock Mwepu, a former midfielder for Brighton Albion and Hove, has been appointed as the new Under-9 academy’s coach.

After being told that he had a hereditary cardiac issue, Enock Mwepu was forced to retire from football in October at the age of just 24.

The former Zambian midfielder will continue to be involved in football, though, by working with Brighton to nurture the upcoming talent.

“God’s plan and timing are always perfect. Ending the year with joy. I belong to Christ Jesus”, Mwepu tweeted after Brighton announced his new appointment.

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi said in a statement shared on the club’s official website on Friday, December 30: “We’re really happy that Enock has decided to remain here at our club and use his experience to help develop our young players.

“Considering his age, Enock has a wealth of experience. He has played in the Champions League and Premier League as well as captaining his country. This is the next chapter for Enock in his footballing career.”

Enock Mwepu made 27 appearances for Brighton after arriving at the club from Red Bull Salzburg for around £18m in July 2021.

Before his health issues forced him to retire early, Mwepu scored 27 career goals and provided 31 assists in all competitions. Most of his goals were for RB Leipzig while three of the goals were for Brighton.
